WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO LAUNCH FLOWER HAUL?

I took the reins of Flower Haul during covid. I had two very little girls at the time and was ready to leave the corporate world (a career in journalism and marketing) behind to follow my passion for floral design. I needed a creative outlet. I had always dabbled with flowers, but never considered making it a career. At the time, Flower Haul was predominantly a Brisbane based retail florist, but I knew once I took it over, I would steer it into a new direction. I was confident in where I wanted the business to go, so I just went for it. Our floral designs and bouquets were a little different to what other florists were offering. Likely because I wasn’t traditionally trained. They were unstructured and natural looking, bright, and abundant, but I think people really liked that. They liked that we were offering something different. The demand for us to take on weddings and events grew organically, and we now work weddings, editorial and events full time.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY?

The people. I get to meet people from all walks of life. People from different backgrounds and cultures, celebrating different traditions. I am welcomed in and get to create something beautiful for the most special day in people’s lives. It’s a privilege, really.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE FLORAL DESIGNS TO CREATE?

The bridal bouquet. I could solely run my whole business making bridal bouquets and be a very happy girl. I love that no two are ever the same and it’s a really personal experience. I feel so honoured to make them for my brides. From hand selecting seasonal flowers in the perfect colourway, shape, size, and smell, to crafting a once off piece that is tailor made for someone’s special day. It’s just a beautiful process and I love it. I always leave a good amount of time to create the bridal bouquet. That and ceremony florals. Creating a 'wow' moment for the bride and groom.

DO YOU HAVE ANYY TIPS FOR BRIDES CHOOSING THEIR WEDDING FLOWERS?

While it’s natural to seek inspiration from Pinterest boards and current trends, I encourage my brides to think about the way they want their wedding to feel. You don’t have to follow what everyone else is doing. Make it personal. What atmosphere and ambiance do you want to create? Is it a vibrant and celebratory vibe you’re after or a whimsical, midsummer night’s dream? Maybe you picture a lush arbour of forest green foliage or a delicate wildflower meadow. Start here. Knowing how you want it to feel, your florist will guide you with what’s in season and available around the time of your wedding. If you're aligned with your florist and you trust them, that's when the magic happens.

LASTLY, WHAT BRIDAL FLORAL TRENDS ARE YOU LOVING AT THE MOMENT?

I am loving minimalist bridal bouquets, rather than tightly packed, oversized bouquets that cover the entire front of your dress as you walk down the aisle. A lot of my brides are opting for something delicate and petite. Soft and airy. A bouquet that showcases a particular flower/s in an artful way. Flowers are intentionally chosen to compliment the intricacies of their wedding dress, instead of competing with it. I love that.
